Bathinda, September 30 – Union food processing industries minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal today said the Rs 925 crore AIIMs medical college cum hospital project was being deliberately delayed by the Congress government which after denying power to it had now supplied erratic electricity to the project which was coming in the way of starting OPD (Outdoor Patient Department) services.
Talking to newsmen here after a visit to AIIMS, Mrs Harsimrat Badal said instead of two parallel lines of supply to ensure continued uninterrupted power to the prestigious institute, single line supply had been initiated after much delay. “Even this supply, which started last week only after I red flagged the matter two days earlier, was disrupted for more than 24 hours yesterday. This erratic supply is coming in the way of testing sophisticated machinery which needs to be done before the OPD can be made operational”.
The union minister said the Congress government had delayed the AIIMS project at every step and she had constantly pushed and even exposed the government for denying requisite permissions to the project. She said even now despite the Power minister and Finance minister being from the area, even dedicated uninterrupted power supply was not being given to the institute. “This is delaying provision of health care facilities to the people”, she said adding the Power minister should explain why parallel line supply could not be provided to AIIMS.
Mrs Badal said the AIIMS management was recruiting para-medical staff for the institute and the building was complete. “Now the time had come to test the high tech machines for which quality power through parallel supply lines is needed. This is the responsibility of the State government which has committed the same in the mou of the project”, she added.
The Bathinda mp said earlier also the State government was oblivious to its responsibility to provide power to AIIMS and had been jolted out of its slumber with the Union Secretary, Health asking the Punjab chief secretary to intervene and do the needful immediately. She said even now a patchy job had been done with the Institute being provided supply from a rural feeder.
Stating that now the people would take the Congress government to task, Mrs Badal said Punjabis were already fed up from the government for not giving them benefits of the free medical insurance for one year by not implementing the central government’s Ayushman Bharat scheme. She said social welfare schemes were also being denied to the people. “Students are not being given SC scholarships, girl students are not being given cycles. Even the old age pension and Shagun schemes are not being implemented properly. The less said about the sham of Job Melas for youth the better. Promises made to each and every section of society have been dishonored and now even the sick are being denied access to quality healthcare”.
HITES chief engineer M P Gupta explained that non-availability of uninterrupted power was coming in the way of testing hospital machinery. Former chief parliamentary secretary Saroop Chand Singla was also present on the occasion.
