CANCER AWARENESS DAY CELEBRATED AT AIIMS BATHINDA

Cancer awareness week was celebrated with great enthusiasm and zeal at AIIMS, Bathinda from 1 st February to 6 th February. It was organized by Departments of Radiation Oncology, Community and Family Medicine and Surgical Oncology. The inauguration ceremony was done by the Director prof. Dr. D. K. Singh who emphasised the role of prevention in cancer and early detection. The importance of medical, social and communal integration was affirmed by Dean and Medical Superintendent Prof Dr. Satish Gupta. The week continued with various cancer preventive sessions for e.g. In head and neck cancer by Dr Rohit Mahajan (Assistant Prof, Department of Radiation Oncology), early detection and prevention of breast and cervical cancers by Dr Sapna Marcus Bhatty (Associate Professor and In-charge Department of Radiotherapy), screening in cervical cancer by Prof Dr. Lajya Devi Goyal (Head, Department of obstetrics and Gynecology), screening in breast cancer by Dr Sapna Marcus Bhatty, cancer screening and prevention by Dr Nikhil Garg (Assistant Prof. Surgical Oncology), Introduction to familial cancer myths by Dr Bhola Nath (Additional Professor, Department of Community and Family Medicine) and Prof Dr Akhilesh Pathak (Department of Forensic Medicine),and screening in head
and neck cancer by Dr Rohit Mahajan. The target population was the MBBS student and the community at large. A grand programme was organized on 4 th of February where Dr Sapna welcomed the chief guest Prof Dr D.K. Singh and Medical Superintendent Prof (Dr) Satish Gupta and the entire faculty to the cancer awareness campaign 2021. A cancer skit depicting the trials and tribulations of a newly diagnosed cancer patient was screened on the occasion. The skit was beautifully prepared by first year students under the guidance of Dr Sapna and Dr Ankita. The highlight of the programme were the cancer survivors who were present to grace the occasion and share their experiences throughout the battle they fought during their
cancer treatment. They were felicitated with a certificate of appreciation and roses which are a emblem of love and happiness. The worthy director interacted with the survivors and congratulated them. Continuing the same zeal and enthusiasm, on 5 th February the cancer awareness camp was organized at Badal Village by Dr Ankita Kankaria (Assistant Prof.
Department of Community and Family Medicine). The chief guests were Dr Ranju Singhla (Civil Surgeon, Muktsar) and Dr Manju Bansal (SMO, Badal). The participants were mainly the Asha workers and people from rural areas. They were made aware by demystifying the myths associated with cancer by Dr Ramnika Aggarwal (Associate Prof. Department of Community and Family Medicine) and was concluded by Dr Sapna and Dr Ankita with the participants and faculty taking a pledge to spread awareness in the community in every possible way.
