The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab has termed the job of Excise Inspector given to millionaire son-in-law of Cabinet Minister Gurpreet Singh Kangar on compassionate grounds as a betrayal with lakhs of unemployed youth of Punjab. In a joint statement issued from the party headquarters here on Saturday, AAP MLAs Prof Baljinder Kaur, Principal Budh Ram and Rupinder Kaur Ruby said that giving jobs on the basis of special compassion to the millionaire son-in-law of a cabinet minister, bypassing the rules, laws and conditions, is an extent of shame. They said that this is a betrayal of lakhs of youth of Punjab.
Prof Baljinder Kaur said the criteria which have been set on the basis of compassionate grounds, if someone gets a job on that basis; then they have no objection. “But if able millionaire families take away the rights of needy common youth by taking jobs on the basis of compassionate grounds, then nothing can be shameful than this,” she added.
Principal Budh Ram said the mission of ‘Ghar-Ghar Rozgar’ of the ruling Congress has remained confined only to the children of Congress MLAs and ministers. He said the Congress which had come to power with the promise of giving ‘Ghar-Ghar Rozgar’, had given four jobs. These include the grandson of former Chief Minister Beant Singh, son of Congress MLA Rakesh Pandey, son of Fateh Jang Singh Bajwa. But the Bajwa family later refused to take this job due to public protests. However, now cabinet minister Gurpreet Singh Kangar’s millionaire son-in-law Gursher Singh has been given the job on compassionate grounds.
Rupinder Kaur Ruby said the government should give jobs on priority basis to the dependent applicants who have been waiting for a long time. She said that still in every government department, board, and corporation of Punjab, thousands of applications are gathering dust in which jobs have been sought on the basis of compassion on behalf of eligible dependents. “Most of these applications are lying in files for the last 15-20 years but there is no one to ask them,” she added.
The AAP MLAs said on one hand the ruling Congress MLAs and ministers are busy giving jobs to their son, daughter and son-in-law by breaking merit and on the other hand, lakhs of eligible youth of Punjab are forced to protest for jobs. “They are trying to wake up the government by risking their lives by climbing the towers, jumping into tanks and canals. But the unemployed and the youth are not on the agenda of the government,” they added.
The leaders further said that even after a lapse of four-and-a-half-years, till now neither ‘Ghar-Ghar Rozgar’ was given nor the unemployed were given a monthly allowance of Rs 2,500. “It is clear that the people will ask for their account before the election and will teach them a lesson in the elections for cheating,” they added.
