Akal Takht Sahib Punishes Sukhbir Badal, Strips Parkash Badal of Honorary Title
On December 2, 2024, the Akal Takht Sahib, the highest temporal authority of Sikhs, announced a religious punishment (“tankhah”) for Sukhbir Singh Badal and other Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders. The decision follows the party’s alleged mishandling of sacrilege cases during their tenure in government from 2007 to 2017.
As part of the punishment, Sukhbir Badal has been directed to perform voluntary religious service at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. His duties as a “sewadar” will include cleaning utensils and shoes as an act of atonement. Additionally, former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Sukhbir’s father, was stripped of the honorary title “Fakhr-e-Qaum” (Pride of the Community) for his alleged role in related incidents.
This move by the Sikh clergy is seen as a significant step to ensure accountability and address past grievances that deeply affected the Sikh community’s sentiments.
