On December 2, 2024, the Akal Takht Sahib, the highest temporal authority of Sikhs, announced a religious punishment (“tankhah”) for Sukhbir Singh Badal and other Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders. Additionally, former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Sukhbir’s father, was stripped of the honorary title “Fakhr-e-Qaum” (Pride of the Community) for his alleged role in related incidents.
